Timing Chain Tensioner Failure on VAG EA888/EA113 Engines: Symptoms, Causes and What to Do

A faint rattle on cold start. Gone in a few seconds. Easy to ignore.

Until the day it isn't a rattle anymore.

Timing chain tensioner failure is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — problems on the Volkswagen Group's turbocharged four-cylinder engines. It has touched EA888 units across the Golf GTI, Audi A3, A4 and Q5, Škoda Octavia vRS and SEAT Leon Cupra, and earlier EA113 engines before them. If you own a turbocharged VAG car built in the last fifteen years, this is a fault worth understanding before it finds you.

What the Timing Chain Actually Does​

Unlike a timing belt, which is designed to be replaced on a schedule, a timing chain is marketed as a lifetime component. It keeps the crankshaft and camshafts spinning in perfect sync so valves open and close at exactly the right moment.

A hydraulic tensioner keeps constant pressure on that chain, taking up slack as the chain wears over tens of thousands of kilometres. As long as the tensioner does its job, the chain stays taut and timing stays accurate.

The problem is that on several generations of EA888 and EA113 engines, the tensioner itself — not the chain — has a well-documented tendency to fail early, sometimes well under 100,000 km.

The Symptoms Owners Actually Report​

This is where forum threads and VCDS logs earn their keep. The pattern tends to repeat itself across completely different cars:

  • A rattling or "marbles in a can" noise on cold start, lasting one to three seconds before disappearing.
  • The noise gradually returning at idle, then under load, as wear progresses.
  • Illuminated check engine light with camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes — commonly P0016 or P0017.
  • In advanced cases, a sudden loss of power or a engine that won't start at all, because the chain has skipped teeth on the sprocket.

The early noise is the cheap warning. The skipped tooth is the expensive one.

Why It Happens​

A few design factors show up again and again in failure analysis and independent teardowns:

The tensioner relies on engine oil pressure to hold itself extended against the chain. If oil pressure drops even briefly — during a cold start, from an overdue oil change, or from a worn oil pump — the tensioner can momentarily lose grip, letting the chain go slack for a fraction of a second. Do that enough times and the ratchet mechanism inside the tensioner wears out.

Extended oil change intervals, common in the mid-to-late 2000s and early 2010s, made this worse. Longer intervals meant more oil degradation and more time spent with borderline oil pressure before the next service.

Why VCDS and OBDeleven Matter Here​

This is exactly the kind of fault where a proper diagnostic tool earns its price back many times over. Camshaft and crankshaft correlation codes on their own don't tell you whether you're looking at early tensioner wear or a chain that has already jumped time.

Pulling live data — camshaft/crankshaft timing deviation values, fuel trims, and misfire counters per cylinder — lets you separate "get this looked at soon" from "stop driving the car today." A rattle with clean correlation values is a very different repair bill than one with several degrees of cam timing drift already logged.

What To Do If You Hear It​

If you notice a cold-start rattle on an EA888 or EA113-powered VAG car, a few steps are worth taking before it becomes a bigger job:

  • Check the oil level and condition immediately — low or badly degraded oil accelerates tensioner wear.
  • Log a VCDS or OBDeleven scan for camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes, even if the engine light isn't on yet.
  • Don't dismiss an intermittent cold-start noise as "normal for these engines" — it's common, not harmless.
  • If a tensioner replacement is recommended, ask whether the updated revision part is being used — several updated tensioner and guide rail designs exist specifically because the earlier ones under-performed.

Caught early, a tensioner replacement is a moderate repair. Caught late, after the chain has skipped time, valves and pistons can meet each other in ways they were never designed to. The difference between those two outcomes is usually just a few thousand kilometres — and whether anyone was listening.
